How VA combined disability ratings actually work
The VA does not add your ratings together. A 50% and a 30% rating do not equal 80%. Instead, the VA uses "VA math": each rating is applied to the efficiency you have left. Starting at 100% efficiency, a 50% rating leaves 50% efficiency. The next 30% rating is applied to that remaining 50%, adding 15 — for a combined 65%, which rounds to a 70% rating.
What is the bilateral factor?
When you have service-connected conditions affecting both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles, the VA combines those ratings first and then adds an extra 10% of that value — the bilateral factor — before combining with your other ratings. Our calculator applies this automatically when you mark a condition as bilateral.
