How to File a VA Disability Claim: A Plain-English Walkthrough

July 14, 2026 · 7 min read · Getting Started

Filing a VA disability claim is mostly about preparation. The paperwork is manageable once you understand what the VA is actually looking for and the order things happen in.

Start with the three building blocks

Nearly every service-connected claim rests on three things: a current diagnosed condition, an in-service event or exposure, and a link between the two. If any one of those is missing or thin, that is usually where a claim stalls.

  • Current condition — documented by a medical provider
  • In-service event, injury, or exposure — found in your service records
  • The connection ("nexus") — a medical opinion tying them together

Gather your evidence before you file

Pull your service treatment records, your DD-214, and any private medical records related to the conditions you plan to claim. Organize them by condition, not by date — it makes the file far easier for a reviewer to follow.

Statements from people who knew you in service or who see the effects day to day can help fill gaps where records are thin.

File, then expect an exam

After you file, the VA will usually schedule a C&P exam. Attend it, be honest, and describe your worst days as well as your average ones — the examiner is documenting severity, not judging you.

From there the claim moves through evidence gathering, rating, and a decision. Keep copies of everything you submit.
